High-intensity, High-res IPS LCD Display Using Amorphous Silicon TFTs Developed for Smartphones
High-definition (HD: 720 x 1280) compatible 4.5-inch high-intensity IPS LCD display developed
Hitachi Displays, Ltd. (President: Yoshiyuki Imoto, hereafter referred to as Hitachi Displays) has now developed a high-intensity, high definition (HD: 720 x 1280) compatible TFT IPS LCD display that utilizes amorphous silicon TFTs and is for use in smartphones. Low-temperature poly silicon (LTPS) TFTs have been used for compact, high definition (HD: 720 x 1280)-compatible high-res TFTs hitherto, because production with amorphous silicon TFTs was problematic in terms of compatibility with the drivers – due to the increase in pixel quantity – and of ensuring the wiring area on the LCD panel. Now, in response to flourishing demand, Hitachi Displays has raised manufacturing process precision and made innovations in LCD drive technology to develop an HD-(720 x 1280) compatible compact high-res LCD display that uses amorphous silicon TFTs.
Alongside the spread of smartphones and the increase in high-res, high-quality content for mobile terminals – such as HD video and photo-quality books – a large demand has arisen for smartphone displays that can display high-resolution images crisply and brightly. To meet that demand, Hitachi Displays launched an HD-(720 x 1280) compatible 4.5-inch high-res IPS LCD display for LTPS-TFT smartphones in February 2011. Now we have additionally developed an HD-(720 x 1280) compatible, compact high-res LCD display that uses amorphous silicon TFTs.
By using amorphous silicon TFTs, this LCD display realizes a high degree of resolution (329 ppi*1) that is close to the limit of what the human eye can discern. And thanks to our technology for enhancing the pixel aperture ratio and backlight technology that utilizes light more efficiently, decline of brightness due to the display’s higher resolution is prevented.
In the future, Hitachi Displays will be further rounding out its line-up of displays for smartphones, developing and marketing small and medium-sized LCD display products that meet the needs of the market.
The newly developed high-intensity, high-res amorphous silicon TFT IPS LCD display will be on exhibit from October 26 to 28, 2011 at FPD International 2011, to be held at Pacifico Yokohama.
