Hitachi Displays develops IPS LCD for mobile phone enabling 1.5 times brightness and twice previous contrast

Latest IPS technology (IPS-Pro) for high image quality TVs reutilized in mobile phones

Hitachi Displays, Ltd. (Executive President: Kazuhiro Mori) has become the first manufacturer to employ the latest IPS technology (IPS-Pro*1) currently installed in high image quality TVs in mobile phones, developing a high definition (QVGA) TFT LCD that offers a high quality image, 1.5 times the brightness and twice the contrast of the company's previous product*2 with no additional power consumption. Shipping of samples of this new product will commence in January 2006, with mass production scheduled to start in June 2006.

Integration of communications and broadcasting is expected to evolve rapidly from now on with the advent of faster communication speeds. Digital broadcasting for mobile terminal (One Segu: 1 segment service) will be launched in Japan starting April 2006, and to cater for this mobile phones will require a variety of features, including high image quality LCDs.

Confident that IPS LCD is the optimal technology for delivering high image quality, we have deployed IPS technology not only in TVs, but also in digital cameras and mobile phones. IPS technology goes a considerable way toward solving the problem of LCD view angle, in which contrast and color tones change when the screen is viewed from different angles, without using view angle correction film, successfully reproducing images that are natural and stunningly beautiful even when viewed from an oblique angle. Now family and friends can enjoy together images and pictures stored on mobile phones and digital cameras.

Advanced IPS technology developed for TV improves the design of the pixel structure to enhance light transmissivity from the backlight. For use in compact high definition LCDs, it also optimizes high definition pixel wiring and enhances fine processing of wiring.

IPS technology:

IPS technology refers to lateral electric field LCDs that operate differently to normal TFT LCDs. Hitachi unveiled IPS technology in 1995 and released it for commercial use in 1996. Thereafter it has evolved in Super-IPS, Advanced-Super IPS and IPS-Pro versions. In IPS technology, due to a lateral electric field, LCD molecules rotate on a plane parallel to the TFT board. The simple movement of molecules provides excellent performance in terms of view angle, color reproducibility and response time for intermediate color tones. This technology has been employed in large 32 inch LCD TVs manufactured by Hitachi and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. and is highly rated for its image quality.
