Chimei Innolux Corporation (Taiwan) Contracted for Production of Medium-Size IPS LCDs

Production Capacity of Medium-Size LCDs for use in Tablet PCs to be Expanded in FY2010

Hitachi Displays, Ltd. (President: Yoshiyuki Imoto, hereafter referred to as Hitachi Displays) has agreed to grant its IPS LCD technology to Taiwanese LCD manufacturer Chimei Innolux Corporation (hereafter referred to as CMI) for the contracted production of medium-size IPS LCDs for use in tablet PCs and other electronics. CMI plans to start the mass production of medium-size IPS LCDs in FY2010, and Hitachi Displays will improve its supply capability with a focus on 6-inch to 10-inch IPS LCDs, where increased demand is expected.

Currently, in the mini-notebook range of PDAs, the popularity of tablet PCs is growing rapidly, and it is expected that shipments of mini-notebook PCs will rise to 86 million units in FY2015, a 139% increase over FY2009*. Since tablet PCs are designed to be viewed easily from any angle, attention has been focused on the use of IPS LCDs, which show little variation in contrast or color when viewed at any angle.

In addition to providing its highly regarded IPS LCDs to the market for medium-size IPS LCDs, where expansion is expected primarily from tablet PCs, Hitachi Displays will also strengthen its supply capability of medium-size LCDs through a partnership with CMI and its strong production capacity.
CMI is aiming to start mass production in FY2010, after which it will provide preferential supply to Hitachi Displays. This will allow Hitachi Displays to ensure a supply capability of medium-size IPS LCDs to meet increasing market demand.

About IPS Technology

IPS (In-Plane Switching) technology is a TFT liquid crystal technology that was put to practical use by Hitachi in 1996. With IPS, liquid crystal molecules rotate in a plane parallel to the TFT substrate when an electric field is applied horizontally. This results in superior performance in terms of viewing angles and better response speeds for color purity and half tones. IPS stands for In-Plane-Switching mode system which utilizes horizontally oriented liquid crystal molecules. IPS mode system can provide wider viewing angles in principle and provide vivid and high quality picture regardless of the viewing angle. In particular, IPS-Pro* technology newly developed for TVs boasts high picture quality and the lowest power consumption in industry with 1.8 times of permeability and 4.5 times of contrast ratio compared with the IPS mode system in early stage. IPS Alpha calls the panels produced with this technology "IPS Alpha Panel" and provides them all over the world.

* In-Plane Switching Provectus: Provectus means "innovation" in Latin
